A traffic discipline zone is being eyed in E.B. Magalona town, Negros Occidental, to lessen road accidents, Police Captain Robelito Mariano, head of the Highway Patrol Group in the province, said Tuesday.

He said they are coordinating with Mayor Marvin Malacon about the creation of an inter-agency task force, to be composed of personnel from the Land Transportation Office, Department of Public Works and Highways, and other concerned agencies on road safety, as well as trucking services, bus companies, motorcycle clubs, and transport groups.

Traffic accidents in E.B. Magalona are high because of the long highway there, Mariano said.

Once finalized, E.B. Magalona will be the first town in Negros Occidental where a traffic discipline zone is declared. In Bacolod, its traffic discipline zone is in Barangay Sum-ag.

Mariano said they are waiting for the advice of the local government unit of E.B. Magalona and they will start to convene after the assumption of newly-elected officials on July 1.

Motorists are to strictly abide by all regulations under Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, in a place declared as a traffic discipline zone, such as the no-parking rule along the highway.

The right placement of signage and pedestrian lanes will also be done, Mariano said, adding that they are eyeing to make the whole province a “traffic discipline zone.”*
