“We have to showcase what we have,” Malacon said, adding that the public should to get a taste of the seafood of our town.

One of the most popular is the blue crab that has become an industry, Malacon said.

But aside from the blue crab, the Mayor said the nine coastal barangays also produce oysters, sea cucumber, bangus as well as shrimps.

He said that aside from the annual Ugyonan Festival, the patronal fiesta of the locality every May 1, he and the Sanggunian Bayan as well as the different department heads agreed to come up with the seafood festival.

This is not only to promote the produce but to make a name for the locality which Malacon admitted is not known much compared to other localities in the province.

“If Manapla town is known for its puto (rice cake) we also want to be identified as the seafood capital of the province,” Malacon said.

He lamented that the blue crab industry is benefitting businessmen not from the locality.

He stressed that the seafood festival is just a start to ensure that the locals benefit more from the blue crab industry rather than the “outsiders.”

Highlight of the seafood festival is the “eat all you can “ on December 9-10 of the seafood produce of the nine coastal barangays.

Aside from this, there will also be a cooking contest dubbed as “Blue Crabs/Kasag Best Recipe”.

December 11, on the other hand, will be the Christmas Carol Competition that will cap the three-day event.* (Eugene Y. Adiong )
