E. B. Magalona strengthens campaign vs pertussis The Municipality of E. B. Magalona, spearheaded by the Municipal Health Office (MHO), is strengthening its campaign against pertussis or “whooping cough” (locally called “tusperina”).

According to the World Health Organization, pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. The disease is only found in humans and can be deadly for babies.

The MHO presented its strategies on how to combat the disease, during a joint meeting of the Local Health Board (LHB) and the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) at the Public Plaza Tuesday [April 23].

Leading the meeting were Vice Mayor Eric Matulac, who represented Mayor Marvin Malacon, and Municipal Health Officer Dr. Edmundo Janeo Jr.

Malacon chairs the LHB, while Janeo is the vice chair of the LHB and action officer of the MNC.

During the meeting, Janeo presented information about pertussis as well as the local government’s fight against the spread of the disease.

The MHO distributed information, education, and communication (IEC) materials on pertussis, including tarpaulins and flyers, to all the stakeholders attending the meeting.

Barangay officials were requested to install the tarpaulins in strategic areas in their respective barangays, and to help in the distribution of the IEC materials to raise community awareness on the highly contagious disease. Also requested to install the tarpaulins in their workplaces were school heads, Day Care workers, and representatives from the religious sector.

Also attending the meeting were Sangguniang Bayan Member Joey Pugales, chairman of the SB Committee of Health; Sangguniang Bayan Member Marlon Malacon, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay; other members of both the LHB and MNC, punong barangays and SK chairpersons of all the 23 barangays, barangay council members (kagawad) who chair their committee on health, representatives from the Department of Health, DepEd District of E. B. Magalona, and religious sector, personnel of the Municipal Health Office, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, Municipal Planning and Development Office, Municipal Budget Office, teachers from Day Care Centers, and other health stakeholders.*
